Association of Horizon, Inc

The Association of Horizon, Inc. is an all volunteer organization that provides recreational activities for adults with physical disabilities. Horizon has a vision of a community where barriers between people with and without physical disabilities are transcended, limitations are overcome, new abilities are discovered and an increased awareness of self and others is developed. This vision has been accomplished for at least one week out of the year since 1992, during their weeklong summer camp. Horizon Camp gives approximately 100 campers the opportunity to enjoy many activities they may otherwise never experience.

The camp is held on a beautiful Lake Bloomington at the Timber Pointe Outdoor Center in Hudson, IL. Everything at the campsite is fully accessible including the cabins, pool, waterfront for boating or fishing, target sports area, horseback riding and endless trails. Each camper is paired one on one with a volunteer that provides care for them all week, along wth companionship. Camper Mona Nyman says “Horizon Camp is the place where, once a year people with disabilities can go and relax and have fun! For six days, your disability fades and you’re judges not by your physical limitations, but for who you are as a person. And believe me, that’s a refreshing change from everyday life!”

As important as Horizon Camp is for the campers, it provides equally for the volunteers. Many of Horizon’s volunteers were introduced to the origination through presentations given at their schools and they decide to attend camp for the service hours they can earn. Aside from earning their service hours, the students gain fro learning from their camper that people with disabilities are not different from everyone else except for the physical limitations they endure. “you know that awkward moment when people do not know how to interact with someone with a disability? That disappears at Horizon Camp. People see themselves as what they can have in common, not their differences” says longtime volunteer Chris Gieck.
